I was sitting in my favorite corner booth at the local cafe, the kind of place where the smell of roasted beans usually fuels my best chapters. I had just hit the flow state on a 3,000-word feature article when I remembered a deadline for a podcast guest spot. I plugged in my XLR-to-USB interface,…
I was hunched over my keyboard at 2 AM in a dimly lit hotel room, trying to whisper a ‘warm and inviting’ voiceover for a client who needed a demo by breakfast. My fancy XLR setup was tucked away in my home studio hundreds of miles away. I hit record on my laptop, hoping for…
I was sitting in my cramped home office, heart pounding because I had finally landed a guest for my show that I’d been chasing for months. We talked for an hour, the conversation was pure gold, and I felt like a total pro. Then I hit stop and played back the file. My heart sank….
I was five minutes away from the biggest interview of my life. My guest was already in the virtual waiting room, and I was staring at my sleek, expensive laptop with a look of pure betrayal. I had a high-end XLR mic, a secondary camera for a wide shot, and a lighting kit—but only two…
I was sitting in a cramped airport terminal at O’Hare, leaning so close to my screen that my nose was practically touching the glass, desperately trying to hear if a client’s voiceover was clipping. It sounded like we were recording…

I’ll never forget the sinking feeling in my gut when I sat down to edit my first “on-the-road” interview. I was in a tiny hotel room, proud of my compact gear, thinking I had finally mastered the art of being a digital nomad. But as soon as I hit play, my heart dropped. Every few…
I was three hours deep into a vocal session for a local singer when my laptop started spitting static like a failing engine. Every time the chorus hit, the audio sputtered and popped, making the beautiful take we just recorded sound like it was being played through a broken radio. I felt my face get…
